CONDITIONS

INTRODUCTION

The Foundation aiming to help to raise our youth, who are the warranty of our future, as citizens, who internalize the supremacy of law and trust in justice, who have the awareness and carry the responsibility of a citizen, who favor peaceful, non-violent means in resolving their conflicts and problems, who can create peaceful environments is realizing the 14th one of the contests, which it organizes to encourage the works in various areas along this road.

 

This year we determined the subject of the Award Contest of 28 September Personal Disarmament as “news items” in “journalism”. This is because news is important means of communication, which inform the people about what has been happening in their neighborhood, country and in the world. The news that reaches the masses through the media has an important role in the people and the society making healthy comments and in their development. Just as in every social issue, if the negative effects of personal armament” on society is pointed out in these news reported with awareness of responsibility in this matter, they trigger correcting and positive comments. Due to these reasons the importance of “news” is great and the responsibility of the person in charge of them is sacred.

SUBJECTThe subject of the “News Article” contest is "Personal Disarmament: ENTITLE LIFE”

AIM

The aim of our contest is to draw attention to social dimensions of personal disarmament by using the sociological and socio-psychological indicators provided by the “news” and its power and the facilities it provides in social communication. Emphasizing the fact that as well ass being a mean of communication, the language of the news can be “far from the language of violence” and thus facilitating the narration of news items without using the expressions of violence to become more wide spread in the society are also the aims of the contest.

 

PARTICIPATION:

1.      All “news items” related to incidents that occurred in the society with any tool described as a weapon by law such as Firearms, knives, guns with Percussion and Gas Cartridges defined as Blank firing guns, rifles and shotguns are included in the contest.

2.      This contest has four categories:

·         Newspaper news article

·         Television news item

·         Radio news item

·         Internet Newspaper news article

3.      All works published or aired in the four mediums above eligible to qualify for a “news item” can take part in the contest.

4.      All journalists in local and in common media and all students studying journalism at the related faculties of the universities can take part in the contest. Those who are journalists and those who are studying to become journalists can take part in this contest.

5.      Works that are the product of more than one person can also take part in the contest. Those who realize the work are joint nominees. Thos who create the work should nomşinate one person from the group. In case the joint work is awarded a prize, the ckeque will be in the name of this person nominated by the work team.

6.      Members of the Panel of Judges may not enter the contest.

7.      Works published or broadcasted in media between 10 September 2007 and 10 September 2008 will qualify. However, it is not compulsory that the nominee works for the company his/her work was published or broadcasted in.

8.      The person entering contest should not have taken part in any other contest with the same piece of work. Any work found to have taken part in ant other contest will not be evaluated even if it qualifies for a prize.

9.      Personal applications to the contest are accepted as well as applications by institutions and organizations. Institutions and organizations must add a notification expressing the consents of the nominee.

10.  Each contestant can enter the contest with a maximum of 5 works in one medium or various mediums. However their other work during the year will be taken into consideration.

11.  Each contestant should send 1 photograph together with the application form and the broadcasted or published news item (in accordance with the criteria below) 15 September 2008 to the following address: “Umut Vakfı, Yıldız Posta Cad. No:52/6 Esentepe İstanbul”. The application deadline for nominations is 18:00 on Monday, 15 September 2008. Umut Foundation may not be held responsible for any delay or damage in the post.

12.  The works entering the contest should be as follows:

·         If it is a newspaper news item, 13 copies (if photocopy in color and original size) of the whole page the news item was published in should be sent

·         If it is a internet newspaper news item; 13 copies of the Screenshot of the news item on the web and in addition 2 CD copies of the news demo

·         If it is a radio news item Radio item, 2 copies of the aired material in AUDIO CD format

·         If it is a television news item 2 copies of the broadcasted material in DVD format

Should be sent to Umut Foundation.

13.   The name of the work, the title of the work, the name and surname of the author and the category the work competes should be stated on the work.

14.  It is compulsory that the website (URL address) on which the work entering the contest is active, so that the Panel of Judges can see it published in the evaluation meeting. The internet newspaper news items with an inactive URL will not be taken into consideration. 

15.  The works entering the contest in TV and radio categories should be handed in to Umut Foundation with an official document from the Media Organization that aired the work giving details of the date(s) and the time(s) the work aired.

16.  The work and their side product will not be returned to the owners at the end of the contest.

17.  The works entering the competitions will be considered if they are not in contradiction with the aim and the Principle of Umut Foundation and the articles on The Declaration of the Journalist’s Rights and Responsibilities of Union of Turkish Journalists.

EVALUATION
The panel of judges will carry out the evaluation of the entries on second or third week of September.

AWARDS
The winners of the News Article Contest will be announced by the panel of judges as part of the ceremonies to be held on Umut Foundation’s personal disarmament day on 28 September. The awards to be given to those that are placed are as follows: 

·         First price in “Newspaper news article”                                 : 2.500 YTL

·         First price in “Television news item”                                     : 2.500 YTL

·         First price in “Radio news item ”                                          : 2.500 YTL

·         First price in “Internet Newspaper news article”                     : 2.500 YTL

 

“Encouragement Award for Young Journalists” will be given in following categories:

·         Encouragement Award for Young Journalists in Newspaper news article: 1.000 YTL

·         Encouragement Award for Young Journalists in Television news item    : 1.000 YTL

·         Encouragement Award for Young Journalists in Radio news item          : 1000 YTL

·         Encouragement Award for Young Journalists in Internet Newspaper news: 1000 YTL

Additionally the Panel of Judges may decide to give out a Special Award and an honorable mention (platelet).

 

AWARDS CEREMONY

The awards for the prize winning articles will be handed out in the awards ceremony on 28 September, 2008.

COPYRIGHT
The participant accepts in advance the transfer of his/her rights of reproduction, publication, representation, and making it public, which emanate from 5846 numbered Law, free of charge to Umut Honored Leaders Raising Foundation and accepts, when necessary, executing the related written procedures at a later time, from the moment of submitting the work of art that is the subject of the participation.

The participant already accepts and promises within this scope that Umut Honored Leaders Raising Foundation has the right to use the work of art free of charge by specifying the owner of work for directly or indirectly related all announcements, presentations and  other similar activities and in visual/audio document and materials.

The participant accepts, declares and promises that the work of art presented is his/her own, the only respondent is himself/herself in the case of demands of 3rd parties which may emanate from 5846 numbered Law and other laws due to this work, criminal responsibility related to the work is solely is his/her own, Umut Foundation has no legal or criminal responsibility regarding the mentioned matters (and the right of recourse is reserved to himself/herself).

The participant when it is understood that prized work of art with which he/she participated in the competition, does not belong themselves will return the prize within 10 days.

OTHER CONDITIONS
It will be counted that the participants to have accepted in advance by participating the competition the conditions of the competition and the decisions of Selection Committee. In the case that the owner of the work of art is more than one, the situation should be specified during the application and it is obligatory for all the owners of the work of art to sign the application form by reproducing it. For the matters not specified in the Specification or when in doubt, Selection Committee will act as an arbiter for the conflicts that may arouse between Umut Foundation and the owners of the work of art. Selection Committee is authorized to solve the conflicts.
