welcomed by enthusiasm. There were also people showing their joy by
weapon among the citizens who were seized with enthusiasm and who took
to the streets. The shots which have been heard intensively notably in
Ankara and Istanbul have scared everybody. The joy after the win has
displayed in a sense a new dimension of armaments in Turkey.
The fact that the National Team has advanced to quarter-final beating
the Czech Republic 3-2 in Euro 2008 tournament has been welcomed
enthusiastically. But right after the game, the enthusiasm, which has
spilled to the streets, has left its place to stray bullets. The fact
that some citizens who were seized with the national team’s victory
enthusiasm showed their joy by weapon has caused the panic of lot of
citizens and woke them up. Turkey was lucky as much in the game as in
celebrations by weapon after the game. Luckily there wasn’t any death in
the celebrations where handguns and rifles were fired but five people
were wounded.
5 people were wounded

Hüseyin Güneş who was wounded has been treated in the hospital. It has
been indicated that if the bullet had deviated 1 cm, Hüseyin Güneş, who
has been discharged after a first medical attention, would have died.
17 of the stray bullets fired in the town have hit the windows of houses,
one hit the Theft Office of the Police Department in the third floor,
and another one hit the police vehicle’s siren patrolling in the area.

Devlet Hastanesi by his family wounded in the chest, then after a medical

In the last ten years, 30 people died due to fires opened after a game.
Ayhan Akcan, a member of the Executive Board of Umut Foundation founded
aimed at “individual disarmament”, has said that in the last ten years
about 30 people have died in joy demonstrations with weapon after
important victories in Turkey. Akcan, who has underlined that
considering this kind of demonstrations as a cultural characteristic is
wrong, has defended that the important point here is the “authority gap”.
Akcan, who noted that the State’s concerned institutions, don’t step in,
has said:
“We don’t know how to be happy without using guns”
“Neither the gendarmerie neither the police neither the prosecutor nor
the judge step in while it is fired to residential areas, moreover they
even themselves also fire a gun. Demonstrating its joy indirectly by
weapon is considered normal because it is viewed as a cultural
characteristic. There is an opposite situation here. It is a crime in
the law but there is a joy in this case and this joy is allowed to be
shown by firing. We don’t know how to be happy without shouting, without
bothering the others and without weapons”.
Akcan , who has reminded that about 30 people have died due to this
reason in the last ten years, has called attention to the rise of the
number of death up to 700 people when the open-air amusements like
marriages are taken into consideration. “In this kind of events
generally people who kill each other are member of the same family.
That’s why it doesn’t pass to court often. They resolve it within
themselves”, Akcan said.
5 million people walk around with arms without a license
Akcan has noted that there are 7 million individual weapons in Turkey
and that only 2 million is with a license. Akcan , who indicated that it
means that guns are owned in one out of three houses or in one out of
two adult men, has said: “ People arm themselves generally in the age of
38 to 40. As many as 3,000 people die every year because of guns, 9
million are wounded. Only 17 percent of these are realized with licensed
arms. Guns are used in half of the murders and are the second choice in
suicides”.
